Nerds of Albuquerque!
Join us for Nerd Nite #22 on Friday, August 7th at 1 am at Green Jeans Food Hall.
Nerd Nite is a monthly lecture series that takes place in bars in 100+ cities around the world. We love bringing you all free, entertaining, and informative talks about nerdoms of all shapes and sizes.
We’ve got a great show lined up for you all. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon. Join us to learn, laugh, and drink!
Our talks:
Title: Alien³ is Good, Actually.
Blurb: What if I told you that Alien³, one of the most reviled of the series, was actually good? What if I told you it was worth your time and reconsideration? After we finish shouting at one another, maybe you’ll come away with a new appreciation for what we got through one of the most chaotic productions of a film no one asked for and then very nearly didn’t get at all.
Speaker: Adam Hevey: Adam Hevey is a native of Albuquerque and has been mistaken for NOFX’s Fat Mike on two non-consecutive occasions, has caused over ten thousand dollars of damage to a golf course, has been censored by a sovereign nation’s government, and was mauled by a ninety pound dog earlier this year.
Title: Ignore Previous Instructions: Hacking AI For Fun & Profit
Blurb: Artificial Intelligence is beginning to take over virtually every portion of our lives. This is truly a turning-point in the history of society. And, despite the benefits of the technology, there is a dark side to it that the creators of it are fully aware of, but do not like to talk about — because they cannot stop it. The goal of this talk is to not only talk about it, but shine a spotlight on it, because the security of everyone’s information depends on acknowledging the limitations.
Speaker: Roy Mollenkamp: Roy Mollenkamp has been a professional software engineer for 15 years. He has spent a good portion of that time working in ‘offensive security’ for the U.S. Department of Energy with much of that time spent as a penetration tester for their National Training Center (NTC). He currently works remotely for a software company out of California and works on bug bounties in his spare time.
Title: Women in World War II
Blurb: This talk explores how women reshaped the U.S. military during World War II. It highlights the ways women challenged long‑standing gender norms, ultimately paving the way for their permanent inclusion in military service. It also includes powerful historical photographs, along with stories of New Mexican women who served, and a brief comparison to women who served in the militaries of other countries.
Speaker: Maria Sultemeier: Maria Sultemeier is a proud fifth-generation New Mexican and the Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. She’s passionate about community building, inclusive education, and making museums welcoming to everyone. Maria also serves on the City of Albuquerque Volunteers Advisory Board and holds a Journalism degree from Columbia College Chicago. As an advocate for those with invisible disabilities, she speaks openly about life with epilepsy and type 1 diabetes. Bring up museum culture, under-celebrated women in history, or cats, and she’ll happily nerd out with you until last call.
Come join us for a drink, learn something new, and to meet fellow nerds. Tell your friends, and help us spread the word about Nerd Nite Albuquerque!
Nerd Nite happens because of nerds like you!
